Why the colors?

Did you know: the unique colors on ESD5 Firefighters' helmet shields represent their diverse roles and expertise? It's a tradition dating back to the 1800s. The Color represents your "rank" within the brotherhood. Our lowest rank, "Probationary firefighter," starts with an Orange shield. It's not until you make it past your one-year probationary period (among many other requirements) that you

receive your black shield and earn the right to be called a "Firefighter".
